Etymology[edit]

Potentially attested as aspanmora in 855, attested with certainty as exmorra in the 13th century. Derived form a compound of Old Frisian ēk (oak, Quercus sp.) and mora (moor, bog, place where salt is extracted). The Dutch form of the toponym was borrowed from an earlier variant of the Frisian name.
