Etymology[edit]

First attested as gelremalsen in 1494. Composite name derived from Gelre (pertaining to Gelre) and Malsen (etymology uncertain, likely a pre-Germanic hydronym *Malsna). Malsen was a fief that was split between Gelre and Buren around 1253, with Buren's share receiving the name Buurmalsen.
