Etymology[edit]

First attested as gheetlo at the end of the 13th century. Compound of Old Dutch gēt (goat, female deer) and lo (light forest on sandy soil). The first component has also been interpreted as Middle Dutch get (swamp); however, this etymology is unlikely.
