Etymology[edit]

hàn (to weld) +‎ xẻng (shovel), a jocular name for Hàn Quốc, based on cuốc (hoe), which is homophonous with quốc (nation, country) in Northern dialects, and its usual semantic field companion xẻng (shovel). See also cuốc xẻng (hoe and shovel).
