Etymology[edit]

First attested as hollum in 1485. Borrowed from West Frisian Hollum, potentially derived in turn from Old Frisian holm (hill, elevated place, island) or from a compound of Halle (a personal name) or a term cognate to Old English halh (corner, bend) and hēm (home, settlement). Compare Hall, Hallum and Hellum.
