Calque of Vulgar Latin Pagus Mosarium (“Pagus of the Meuse”), a name for the historical Maasgau region under Frankish rule. Equivalent to Maas (“Meuse”) + gouw (“pagus”, Frankish gau). (Can this(+) etymology be sourced?)
