Etymology[edit]

First attested as moldeka in 1206. Etymology unknown. Potentially derived from an unknown root suffixed with the Gallo-Roman suffix -acum. An opposing hypothesis proposes a derivation from an unknown root suffixed with Proto-Germanic *-ikja. A derivation from a contraction of molde (earth, fine sand, dust) and wijk (village, settlement) is impossible. Compare Blerick, Bunnik, Cuijk, Geverik, Lopik, Maurik, Niftrik, Odijk, Varik, Woezik and Fellerich.
