Etymology[edit]

First attested as Nijeuwe Vossemaer in 1573-1576. Derived from nieuw (new) and a compound of Middle Dutch vorsch (fresh, potable, dammed-in) and meer (pool, watercourse). The element vorsch was quickly reinterpreted as vos (fox, Vulpes vulpes). The element nieuw was added to distinguish the settlement from Oud-Vossemeer.
