Italian petalo- (broad, flat) +‎ English -phyllum (leaf). petalo- is from Italian petalo (petal), which is from Ancient Greek πέταλον (pétalon), and ultimately from πέταλος (pétalos, broad, flat). -phyllum is derived from Ancient Greek φύλλον (phúllon, leaf).
