First attested as poedersijnsambocht in 1282. Potentially a compound of Old Dutch podero (calf, foal) or the otherwise unknown personal name *Poeder and hēm (home, settlement). Compare Poederoijen, Poeijers, Sterksel, Vaarle, Vaarsel, Varsen, Varssel, Varsselder, Varsseveld, Ten Vorsel and Bolsele.
