[edit]Nominal derivative of *kanti (“together with”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱm̥-ti-, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱóm (“next to, with, along”). Cognate with Proto-Italic *komitis (“going together”) (compare Latin comitia (“people's assembly”), comitium (“election place”)).
