Latin[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Alteration of Classical ūrīna, likely by analogy with aurum (gold) due to the similarity in colour, perhaps also by contamination from preceding determiners (as in illa urina*ill' aurina).

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

*aurīna f (Proto-Italo-Western-Romance)

  1. urine

Reconstruction notes[edit]

The Occitan variant orina is somewhat anomalous (alongside the expected aurina) and might reflect influence from neighbouring Romance varieties with regular monophthongization of /au̯/.

Declension[edit]

singular plural
nominative */au̯ˈrina/ */au̯ˈrinas/
oblique */au̯ˈrina/ */au̯ˈrinas/
