From Proto-West Germanic *holukōn, *hulikōn (to hollow out), equivalent to holc +‎ -ian. Related to Proto-West Germanic *hulikjan (to bend, curve). Cognate with Middle Low German holken, hȫlken (to hollow out, gouge).
