From *ganǰam (treasure) +‎ *barah (bearer), from Proto-Indo-European *bʰer- (to bear). Cognate with Parthian 𐭂𐭍𐭆𐭁𐭓 (gnzbr /⁠ganzbar⁠/), 𐫃𐫉𐫗𐫁𐫡 (gznbr /⁠gaznβar⁠/), Sogdian 𐼲𐼵𐼻𐼱𐽀 (ɣznβr /⁠γaznβar⁠/), Old Armenian գանձաւոր (ganjawor).
