From Proto-Indo-European *kh₂em-p (to bend). Close to Ancient Greek κάμπτω (kámptō, curve, bend), Sanskrit कम्पते (kampate, trembles), Latin campus (field), Lithuanian kam̃pas (point, edge, angle), Old High German hamf (lame). Related to Latin gamba.
