From earlier *šalna (whence also Proto-Samic *suolnē), borrowed from Proto-Baltic (whence Latvian salna, Lithuanian šalnà), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *śalnāˀ, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱolH-n-eh₂.
