Etymology[edit]

From Pre-Germanic *erppaz, earlier *h₁erbʰnós, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁erbʰ-. Cognate with Ancient Greek ὀρφνός (orphnós, dark brown) (< o-grade *h₁orbʰnós).[1]
