From Proto-Indo-European *perst-, *porst- (“post, finger, peak”). Cognate with Latin postis (“post, doorpost”), Lithuanian pirštas (“finger, toe, pin, cam”), Russian перст (perst, “finger, digit”), Ancient Greek παρστάς (parstás), παστάς (pastás, “portico, porch, inner chamber, bower”).
