Etymology[edit]

Perhaps segmentable into *üni +‎ *-xen, the latter being an ending of a few other animal names.

Cognate with Khitan 𘭌 (*uni, ox), and probably related somehow to Proto-Turkic *ingek; compare Turkish inek.
