From Proto-Balto-Slavic *awiś- ~ *awiź-, either from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ew-iǵʰ(s)-eh₂ or from a substrate language whence also the Latin cognate: Cognate with Latvian àuzas, Lithuanian avižà, Old Prussian wyse, and Latin avena.
