By surface analysis, *vь̑lkъ (wolf) +‎ *-ina. Possibly inherited from Proto-Balto-Slavic *wilkī́ˀnāˀ, from *wilkás (wolf). Compare Lithuanian vilkíena, vilkienà (wolf meat), from Proto-Balto-Slavic *wilkeināˀ.
