Proto-Tocharian[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From a root *ār-(e) of uncertain origin, plus the suffix *-äñce found also in e.g. *ākäñce (remote).

Adams supports a connection of the first element with Hittite 𒄩𒄩𒊑 (ḫaḫri-, lungs ~ midriff), reconstructing Proto-Indo-European *h₂eh₂(e)ri, adducing also Proto-Celtic *ārū (kidney) (Old Irish áru, Welsh aren) and Latin rēn (kidney).

Another hypothesis derives this root from Proto-Indo-European *h₂er- (to fit together > to be fond of, love), comparing especially Ancient Greek ἀρέσκω (aréskō, to please; to make amends), Hesychian ἀρτύς (artús, bond, friendship, love) and Proto-Tocharian *ārtw- (to love, praise, rejoice in).

*āräñce

  1. heart
    Synonym: *käryā-
