Leaf, to lop, “to cut off”

I have doubts about the legitimacy of this reconstruction. Proto-Balto-Slavic *lapas, Lithuanian lãpas, Latvian lapa, Proto-Slavic *lopъ means “leaf”, there however compared with Proto-Germanic *lappô (“lap, rag”) and Proto-Germanic *lattō (“lath, shutter, board”). Proto-Germanic *laubą is on its own page expanded to be of uncertain origin, λέπω (lépō, “to peel, or should I say to lop (what’s the strange Medieval Latin for Middle English loppe?)”) even more so. The etymology of Latin liber looks also diverse. Persian لیف (līf, “bark of palm tree”) well derives from Arabic لِيف (līf). You see man has shoehorned more and more into that root by semantic similitude instead of by respect to formality, @Victar. One assumes any random ablaut and voicedness swap. On top of that the homonymy with a more obvious reconstruction “to love” makes an unlikely contranym. Fay Freak (talk) 13:17, 3 June 2021 (UTC)
