I bet there's actually a connection between the meanings "to carry" and "ground", because the ground carries whatever rests on it. The words for "ground" might mean "the thing that habitually carries". — Eru·tuon 07:53, 6 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

I think that's rather far-fetched and I don't think it reflects the reality that the Indo-Europeans perceived. Do you ever think of the ground as carrying something? It seems more likely that the ground was simply viewed as the bottom of the world. —CodeCat 12:56, 6 April 2016 (UTC)Reply
