Etymology[edit]

First attested as scinlre mere just before 1233. Compound of an unclear first element and lo (light forest). The first element may be cognate with Old Frisian skene (scurf, dandruff) and dialectal schin (dandruff). A relationship with schijnen (shine, glitter) is less likely.
