The village is named with Scottish Gaelic srath (river valley) + eachan (foal). The surname could either derive from the placename or from an Anglicized form of Irish Ó Sruitheáin (descendant of Sruitheán), a personal name from sruith (sage elder) + -án (diminutive suffix).
