(Notifying Atitarev, Bogorm, Bezimenen, Nauka, Ted Masters, Kiril kovachev): Does the pronunciation have two /s/ sounds (as currently indicated) or only one? Benwing2 (talk) 23:32, 8 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Benwing2: I think the standard pronunciation is with geminated /s/, but I'm not sure. I'm certain that borrowed terms which have double -ss- in the donor language, e.g. асоциация (asociacija, association), асортимент (asortiment, assortment)... are pronounced with single -s- [this is also reflected in the spelling], but I don't think this holds for inherited clusters. For example, double -н- and -т- in native words are supposed to be pronounced as geminated /n/ or /t/. Безименен (talk) 13:49, 13 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
For me it's also difficult to say, because by intuition I'd expect the 'proper' pronunciation to be the current double /s/ variant, but I would probably say it with only one /s/ most of the time; I researched online for a few live examples, and in the couple videos I found, 2/3 were definitely single /s/es and the other one sounded slightly more geminated. I can't say what this means for the pronunciation, but if I had to designate one as 'correct', it'd be the 2-/s/ form. Also, my apologies for my late response.
