Etymology[edit]

- It is from Old Armenian *աղբայր (*ałbayr), a by-form of եղբայր (ełbayr). աղբայր (aġbayr) is attested already in 12th century Middle Armenian. Both ա- (a-) and ե- (e-) are prothetic vowels, added before a ր- (r-) or ղ- (ł-). Compare արագ (arag) / երագ (erag). --Vahag (talk) 10:21, 2 August 2015 (UTC)
