Iranian, or rather Greek[edit]

@Vahagn Petrosyan. Calak has added a comparison with Middle Persian /harg/. I would have seen Ancient Greek ἔργον (érgon). But that’s just my uninformed comment. Fay Freak (talk) 22:59, 18 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Fay Freak, the similarity with Greek has been noticed before, but as Ačaṙyan points out, this can't be a Greek borrowing because *երգոն (*ergon) or *երգ (*erg) was expected. Also, the word is too old for a Greek borrowing and does not belong to the semantic field that is typically borrowed from Greek. The Iranian origin is almost certain.
