Hey, Z, this خل (xol, dumb) is very interesting. Where is it attested? Armenologists do not mention it. I only find خل (xul, bent, curved, crooked; mad) in Steingass. --Vahag (talk) 18:50, 25 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hey, unfortunately I can't find it in any work, it's a vulgar word. Dehkhoda (who tends to mention quotes for most entries) also has not mentioned any quotes.[1] خل (xol) is also a variant of خوهل (xohl, curved) (per Dehkhoda and Mo'in), attested in several old works.[2] Mo'in has separate entries for the senses "dumb; mad" and "curved", as if they are etymologically unrelated.[3][4] --Z 19:29, 25 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
By “dumb” do you mean “stupid” or “unable to speak, mute”? --Vahag (talk) 19:49, 25 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
“stupid” (didn't know “dumb” also means "mute") --Z 19:52, 25 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
The second sense of խուլ (xul) is “dumb, mute” and that sense is attested only once, so the Persian word is probably not related (I thought it meant “mute”). خل (xol, bent, curved, crooked; mad) is mentioned by Ačaṙyan under խօլ (xōl, mad, crazy); he says the similarity is coincidental and that the main meaning of the Persian word is “bent, curved”; the meaning “mad” developed in the dialects. So the word is known to Armenologists and its connection to խուլ (xul) or խօլ (xōl) is not accepted, therefore I have removed it for now, until Gaṙnik Asatryan completes his etymological dictionary of Persian and we can check. --Vahag (talk) 20:39, 25 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
