Etymology[edit]

The "curse" is likely a later folk etymology. See these references indicating that "Yeshu" was Jesus's name in his native Galilean dialect.

The third one is hardly an acceptable source, but yeah, his name was in all likelihood ישוע and that was pronounced without the ayn in a Galilean accent. The imitation of this pronunciation by non-Galilean Jews was probably not intended to be friendly, though. (Much like we would now mock somebody we don't particularly like by imitating his accent.)
