Alleged Greek origin[edit]

@Fenakhay: Since the cited article of Nöldeke, it runs as disproven that the term for Sufis would be from σοφός (sophós), which is an absolutely coincidental similarity and not even a semantic one since ascetics are not necessarily wise, and it is communis opinio that the term simply comes from the coarse wool they wore, like تِلِّيس (tillīs), جُوَالَق (juwālaq) etc., with references to their vestments regularly being found in the descriptions of such orders. In other terms, it is a real armchair etymology that comes to linguists’ minds in so far as they did not deign to read the original literature. Fay Freak (talk) 15:42, 11 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
