Etymology[edit]

I think this is directly from Middle Persian mgw (moγu), which is a loanword from Avestan 𐬨𐬋𐬖𐬎 (mōγu) (as opposed to the moγ form, which is from Old Persian), unless this is from the genitive մոգու (mogu). --Z 14:57, 19 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Possibly. But I wonder why Georgian did not use (ɣ) for rendering Iranian /γ/. Borrowing via Armenian would explain that: Classical Armenian did not have a /γ/ sound. Genitive մոգու (mogu) shows that the Armenian word is an u-stem մոգու- (mogu-). Georgian may preserve the original stem of Armenian.
