https://www.etymonline.com/word/ophthalmo- it could just be a compound. Soap 05:02, 8 September 2018 (UTC) (originally signed as Lollipop (talk))Reply

That would make sense, if "ops" just meant the eye in general, while "ophthalmos" meant the eyeball (a "chamber") itself. RedPanda25 (talk) 18:04, 6 April 2021 (UTC)Reply
The loss of /a/ and short vowel in the first syllable would be irregular, but we have words like ὄψις that have a short vowel in what is most likely ultimately the same root. Im confused and about ready to assume we'll never really know. Soap 23:07, 30 May 2023 (UTC)Reply

How is it Pre-Greek if Gaulish for "eye" is "ops"?[edit]

Suggestions? --- Myrnamyers (talk) 13:56, 5 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Well, Beekes could simply be wrong ... see the link above for a discussion of an alternate theory. That said, coincidences do happen, so perhaps we should list both theories. Soap 22:46, 1 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
