'天上' versus '天' space '上'[edit]
I believe that the word '天上' (tian1shang4) means the noun 'sky' (天空) (cf. 现代汉语词典7 p1293 "名 天空。" http://dict.revised.moe.edu.tw/cgi-bin/cbdic/gsweb.cgi?o=dcbdic&searchid=Z00000053260 "天空。"), while the two character phrase '天' space '上' (tian1 shang5/4) means 'on high; in the sky'. Therefore, the two definitions might need to be split into two pronunciations. But I'm not certain enough to make the edit because 现代汉语规范词典3 p1295 has "名 天空中。".
