Pinyin[edit]

The former is the official pronunciation however the latter is also used in some regions. In the future when you create Mandarin entries would you mind using the proper formatting? Yes, jiàomǔ is the standard pronunciation, as deduced from the Middle Chinese pronunciation of 酵. Lots of people also say xiàomǔ, by analogy with 孝 (xiào). Pronouncing it as xiàomǔ in formal situations would be regarded as an indication of the low education level of the speaker. Hbrug 09:30, 2 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]
