Mysterious Origins of Bigfoot: Gen X or Boomer?[edit]

With terms like hobbit, Klingon, Xenu, and maybe even the mark of the beast, I would imagine that a truly perfected dictionary would trace the term in question back to one person's (the originator's) original documents and recollections, specifying a year, a month and maybe even a very day and hour in which they thought up and/or began to use the term for interpersonal communication. In the case of bigfoot, 1958 seems correct (see Wikipedia), but look at this:

  • "Origin 1950s from the size of the creature's footprints (the term is recorded from the mid 19th century as a nickname for a person with large feet)."Lexico
  • "1958, in the meaning defined at sense 1" Merriam-Webster
  • "[1960–65, Amer.]"FreeDictionary
  • "Word origin [1975–80, Amer.; after bigfoot] This word is first recorded in the period 1975–80." Collins

Is Collins wrong? Or do they have a different standard for deciding when a word comes into existence? --Geographyinitiative (talk) 19:31, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Cancel that, Collins is referring to another term derived from the 1958 term. --Geographyinitiative (talk) 19:36, 10 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]
