As pointed out by the derivation from German Hesse and from the German entry on this page, er, no, it's very much not an exonym. Modern standard German may prefer Hessen but that doesn't make it an "exonym" any more than use of the local dialect form Amoy makes that an exonym in place of Beijing's Mandarin form Xiamen. If anything, until the local German dialect shifts, there's a stronger argument to consider the standard German form of the name the exonym in this case. — LlywelynII 03:23, 31 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
