Someone asked for a verification of this word.
The phrase appears in Shakespeare's Twelfth Night (Act I, Scene 3). You can find it at this site:

It seems that colleges at both Oxford and Cambridge have buttery bars as does the Red Lion at Croyden. I have added three quotes and have removed rfv. Andrew massyn 10:50, 19 August 2006 (UTC)
