See WT:ANO. Some Norwegian dialects are quite different from the old Danish-like standard that became Bokmål, so language reformers based their new standard on those. As I understand it, there's as much difference between Bokmål and Nynorsk as there is between Bokmål and Danish. The matter of what's a dialect and what's a language in the North Germanic languages is a bit sensitive, so we dealt with this the best that we could.
