Alt Spelling[edit]

The alternative spelling "dilemna" is quite common. Can anyone provide information on the origins of this variation?

The Latin derivation certainly indicates that "dilemma" is the correct spelling, but the "dilemna" spelling is too widespread to be a collective typo. E.g. see the collection of confused but adamant "n" spellers at this forum. Does anyone know how this incorrect spelling gained such popularity?

The misspelling should at least be mentioned on this page, ideally with a brief explanation of its origins, widespread use, etc. ~ JasonCarswell (talk) 05:08, 26 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dilemma Between Positives[edit]

Of the wording "seem equally undesirable" in the first sense, is it a 'dilemma' where the two alternatives are positive options? For instance, is it a 'dilemma' when I have to choose between a gift of gold or a gift of silver? English Wikipedia says "A dilemma (Greek: δίλημμα "double proposition") is a problem offering two possibilities, neither of which is unambiguously acceptable or preferable." which seems to accommodate a choice between positives. Is there an original narrower meaning (choice between negatives only) and a broadened meaning (negatives, positives, neutrals)? --Geographyinitiative (talk) 01:53, 29 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
