The noun meaning presented, "A thing that has a metabolic process and fulfills the qualifications for life." seems (to me) more fit to describe "living being". "Living" alone, as in "i care about the living" seems to mean more accurately "living person". You presented living as an intensifier as in "living daylights". An answer to a trivia Q&A column in my local newspaper, the Sydney Morning Herald, gives a different derivation of the phrase "living daylights". According to the answer, this is a corruption of "liver and lights". Lights in this sense referred to the lung. To beat the "liver and lights" out harked back to an earlier age when people ate animal organs more often than we do now. I'm sorry, I do not have a definite reference fo r this derivation, in fact I was looking for it when I came across your entry. If only I could filter out references to that James Bond film in my search.
