Devil[edit]

According to Webster 1913, "the Old Boy" is slang for the Devil. Equinox 00:54, 12 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

Peterborough[edit]

I've heard the expression used of people of any age, but whether this was idiolect or dialect, I have not established. Certainly in Bucks it referred to an older person. And of course in American Pie the "Good old boys were drinking whiskey and rye." which is a different meaning again, shading into the "old boys network" meaning.

Also "Listen old boy[chap, fellow, stick, etc.], I've got some news." is/was an upper-middle or upper class construction.
