Sources?[edit]

I don't believe that this phrase is unique to the US South, yet the entry says, "Known in the US south," suggesting it is endemic there. I'm also dubious of its connection with The A Team. Mr. T's catch phrase was "I pity the fool", not any variant of whoop ass. Given this controversy, external sources may be called for. Cnilep 16:34, 22 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe it came from the Popeye cartoon - Rory Rhoades. - Jan 20, 2011

For anyone who's reading this over a decade later: "whoop" for "whip" definitely sounds Southern. As for The A Team: this phrase would never have made it past the censors in the days of the original series. I don't know anything about the movie, though. To add to entry[edit]

To add to this entry (in order to make it properly encyclopedic): the earliest attested usages of this idiom (in print, film, TV, etc.). 76.190.213.189 00:43, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This is a dictionary. At Wikipedia, encyclopedic is good. Here, it's not. Chuck Entz (talk) 06:33, 18 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
