Rfv-sense: "hoverfly". The word seems to actually refer to vegetation floating in water. -phyte indicates plants or similar life forms generally. I don't know where the insect sense came from. 70.172.194.25 05:28, 13 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

The hoverflies (family Syrphidae) contain two tribes (Eristalini and Sericomyini) with larvae that live in stagnant water, which is prime habitat for pleustophytes. My guess is that there is a journal article somewhere that lists organisms found in pleustophyte communities, which would include actual pleustophytes alongside fauna associated with them, such as hoverflies. Someone who reads an article like that without paying attention to or fully understanding the subject matter (@SemperBlotto, for instance), might pick the wrong organism out of the list as the one the community was named after. I can't find cites that put pleustophyte and hoverfly on the same page at BGC or Scholar. DCDuring (talk) 15:39, 13 March 2022 (UTC)Reply
