The etymology is incomplete. There is an important account of its origins in Old French and subsequently in the Historical French tradition (Le Petit Robert Historique...). Specifically, it appears that the original meaning (échapper) (escaper in 1080) of e-scape to get out of (e-) the hooded cloak (-scape) and run away was transformed into making space for something to be seen. This "space" becomes the -scape in land-scape etc. (MihalOrela 16:23, 30 August 2008 (UTC))[reply]
