Verb inflections[edit]
"Furnish a wheel with spokes" needs inflections, e.g. spoked, that do not apply to the inflection of speak. Equinox ◑ 00:49, 5 July 2012 (UTC)
was spoke ever a noun meaning "speech; that which is spoken"?[edit]
It seems that spokesman can only make sense as a derivation if spoke was once a noun, since I dont know of any other examples in English where we use the construction past (participle) + s + noun to form a noun. "speechman" would be the expected formation following the normal rules of English compounding. helmsman has an -s-, but maybe that is just because the first word ends in -m. —Soap— 09:04, 11 August 2023 (UTC)
