- The fruit (hashkʼaan) is eaten as a food, and the flower buds may be roasted in ashes and the leaves boiled with salt and used for food. It's used as a medicine. The Navajo use it to wash the hair, and also as a laxative, as a delirifacient drug, as a way to induce menopause, to expedite delivery of a baby or placenta, and they once used it to poison arrows. Its juice is used in the making of a black or red dye, the fibers are made into string for tying various ceremonial equipment such as prayer sticks, and it is used to make the sticks for the shoe game. —Stephen (Talk) 16:12, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
