Name

[edit]

Some info on the relative commonness of two names of this language:

  • "Bella Coola language" gets 26 usable BGC hits. (It gets 44 hits with previews, but in 17, the only occurence of the term is in the bibliography, where the titles of other, already-counted works use it. 1 hit is of the phrase Nuxalk (Bella Coola) language, which IMO supports both names.)
  • "Nuxalk language" gets 14 usable hits, plus 1 hit of "Bella Coola (also known as the Nuxalk language)", which supports both names.
  • "Nuxalk-speaking" and "Bella Coola-speaking" get 2 usable hits each (not counting duplicates).
  • "speak|spoke Nuxalk" gets 2, "speak|spoke Bella Coola" gets 11.
  • "Nuxalk word|term" gets 6, "Bella Coola word|term" gets 19.
  • Some sources call the tribe Nuxalk and the language Bella Coola, some call the tribe Bella Coola and the language Nuxalk, some call both Nuxalk, some call both Bella Coola.
