Etymology[edit]
From Russian Закаспи́йская о́бласть (Zakaspíjskaja óblastʹ, “Transcaspian oblast”) as trans- + Caspia, from the fact that in the early 20th century the easiest way to reach it from central Russia or Transcaucasia was across the Caspian Sea, by boat.
